Black and White Picture

Life in the 1930s
My name is Ruth. Life in the 1930s is very challenging already to get a well paying job, but being a woman and finding a job is almost unthinkable. Don’t get me wrong, there are jobs, but they are the types of jobs that are sewing and cleaning. I’m not that kind of person; I went to college and have a degree in engineering. That is why I came to the city this week for job searching. I’m not having much luck in finding a job, so I will tell you about my life at home.    Even though this picture of me is in the city, I really love the country, and that is where my house is. I have a small house that sits on 100 acres of land. Even though I am job searching, I am already making some money by people boarding their horses at my farm. My life may seem crazy to you, but if you were me and had a dream to have two different jobs, one being an engineer and the other running my own stable, you would do it too if you truly loved what you do. The people that board their horses here are not the easy going kind of people. Only the wealthy people would be boarding their horses at a stable instead of keeping them on their own land. Most of the horses here are either show jumpers (warmbloods) or racing horses (thoroughbreds). Since these horses are worth so much money the people are a little bit snotty but that is how the business goes. You learn how to act around each one of the horse owners and from becoming friends with them; I have gotten some job offers. For example, one of them was a horse rider for exercising the horses the day before their race or show. Some of the others were just a stable hand or a groomer.
After a few months with just helping out at horse shows, one of the people that board their horses at my stable said that their friend has an engineer position open. So they asked me if I wanted the job and of course I said yes. I was so happy to get an interview with the owner of the business. When I arrived, I found out that the owner was a woman who was just starting out with her business and wanted to create a business that would be run just be women to let people know that women can be engineers  too and create houses and buildings just as well as guys. The owner hired me and I started the next day. At first business was slow, not many people wanted to work with us, so we had to get the word out about how well we were at our business. After doing this, business actually started to pick up. So many people started to hire us, that we expanded our business and created more jobs for women that weren’t just cleaning or sewing. These were actual jobs that you could life a happy life with.
